At the foot of the Malvern Hills and to the east of Hereford is the market town of Ledbury. Oozing culture, famous for its landmark black and white buildings and streets, and brimming with creativity, Ledbury’s stamp of individuality has made it a destination that keeps on giving.
Tuesdays and Saturdays see its weekly markets in the stunning Grade 1 listed, Market House, located in the centre of town.
The key to discovering Ledbury is to explore its myriad of mews and side streets, literally every few yards along the long High Street and the Homend. Crammed with intriguing independent shops, eateries and galleries, often family run and sometimes owned by those who visited, fell in love with the enchanting town and never left.
Embracing Herefordshire’s festival culture, Ledbury hosts an acclaimed annual Poetry Festival, attracting famous names, poets in residence and rising stars as it comes alive with verse for ten days each July.
Rich in heritage there are several historic points of interest within the town; St Katherine’s Masters House circa 1482, is a rare surviving example of a hospital complex, recently renovated and now the home of Ledbury’s new Library.
Tucked away in picturesque cobbled and much photographed Church Lane, the medieval buildings include the atmospheric Heritage Museum, a mysterious Painted Room; its walls painted with frescoes by an unknown 16thC artisan and Butcher Row House Folk Museum; The museum houses reproduction helmets and breastplates as worn in the Battle of Ledbury (1645), Victorian costumes and various Victorian folk curiosities.
A short drive beyond the town stands Eastnor Castle, a 19 mock or revival castle with many events happening.
The area’s artisan cider and juice producers include famous Weston’s Cider at Much Marcle, and Pixley Berries; makers of incredible juicy cordials.
