The Bromyard Round the Downs Race 2021

Bromyard Round the Downs Race 2021

Join us for this beautiful race of 4.5 miles, with some bracing hills and fabulous views. The first recorded race was in 1923, and the race has taken place annually since 2010.  Although 2020’s race was cancelled due to Covid-19, we are optimistic that this year’s race will go ahead.  We are adjusting our plans accordingly to ensure optimum safety of runners, volunteers and the general public.

This year we are pleased to announce the introduction of chip-timing.  This will enable staggered starts if required, and runners will receive a more accurate race time.  It is a great course and distance for both new and experienced runners, so whether this is your first race or you are aiming to beat your previous time, get training and we look forward to seeing you on race day! You can sign up here:

Race dateSunday 20th June 2021

Refunds: We will not be offering refunds for runners unable to attend on the day due to our test and trace obligations.  If the event is cancelled due to Coronavirus restrictions we will refund entry fees, minus a small booking fee.

Facilities/Parking: Parking is available at Rowberry Street car park (HR7 4DY) and Tenbury Road car park (HR7 4LL).

NB:  This race takes place along roads that remain open to traffic, so high visibility clothing is encouraged.  Some sections of the road do not have pavement.  Whilst we make every effort to ensure vehicles are aware of our event, individual runners are responsible for adopting safe and sensible road running practice throughout the race.  The course is best suited to remaining on the left hand side of the road, so please keep left throughout the race.  Please refrain from using headphones.

Distance/terrain: 4.5 miles, road, suitable for all abilities.

Course details: The race starts outside the Post Office on Church Street, drops down  to Sherford Street and joins the A44.  The race proceeds uphill along the main road to Brockhampton, turning left to join the Bromyard Downs.  From here, runners take in breathtaking views west into Wales and North to Clee Hill, along a minor road.  Runners then join the B4203 heading downhill towards Bromyard, finishing with a short climb up Church Street back to where the race began.  Runners will cross the pedestrian crossing to collect their medal and water, and deposit their timing chip.

Prizes: The winner receives the historic Bromyard Round the Downs trophy to keep for a year.  All entrants receive a medal at the finishing line.  The first ‘local’ across the finish line receives the ‘Val Freegard Cup’ in honour of the late Val Freegard who won the event in the 1940’s and was the race starter when the race was revived in 2010.

The 2019 winner was Andrew Kaighin who ran the course in a time of 25 minutes 40 seconds. The all-time recent record is just over 23 minutes!
